Deputy Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari yesterday advised Internet surfers to immediately report any activity inclined towards the spread of Shia ideology on the social media.
He claimed the social media, including Facebook, was seen as a popular medium for certain movements to spread Shia ideology that could erode the faith of Sunni Muslims.
"We see a worrying trend in the spread of Shiite ideology because it has progressed from mere print publications such as magazines to the social media".
"Therefore, Internet surfers should report immediately to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) or the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) if they come across websites that spread Shia teachings," he told reporters at the Mexico Independence Day reception, here.
Jailani said the ministry was prepared to cooperate with Jakim to monitor such activities so that the people would not be easily influenced by the ever Shia movements to attract followers through the social media.
