According to our first Imam, Imam Ali (pbuh) “patience is of two types: perseverance in the face of that which you despise, and enduring restraint against that which you love.” His beloved wife, Lady Fatima Zahra displayed unwavering patience, true strength and incredible courage after the tragic death of her father, the Holy Prophet (pbuh).
Lady Fatima only lived for another three months after her father’s passing, however endured more than a lifetime’s worth of hardship during this heartbreaking time. In the famous sermon she gave in the mosque of the Holy Prophet, the respected Lady said, “I saw so much calamite that if these had happened to the day, the day would have turned into night.”
Some of the hardest difficulties included the rulers forcefully coming to Lady Fatima’s door, and denying her the right to mourn the loss of the Holy Prophet through her tears. Another hardship Lady Fatima bravely endured was going to her father’s mosque, to ask for the rightful return of Fadak. Yet, through each and every type of adversity Lady Fatima faced, she continued to exude patience and went on persevering for the sake of Allah’s will.
Although she passed away before Imam Ali’s death, as well as the tragedy of Karbala, Lady Fatima’s patience transcended even after her death. She witnessed the murder of her husband and brutal slaying of her children and grandchildren on the plains of Karbala and bore even those calamities with ongoing sabr (patience).
If we want to know what true patience is, all we have to do is look at the incredible life lead by our beloved Lady Fatima Zahra.
