Bomb blast hits heart of Iraqi city of Karbala

Casualties are feared in a bomb explosion that hit the central part of the Iraqi holy city of Karbala, southwest of the capital, Baghdad.

Security officials say a bomber blew himself up in an area between the holy shrines of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and Imam Abbas (PBUH) in the central city on Sunday.

Jamal al-Din Shahristani, an official at the Imam Hussein shrine, said that the powerful blast caused an unspecified number of casualties.

No one has taken responsibility for the incident.

On the same day, attacks in two Shia-populated areas in Baghdad left four people dead and 11 others wounded.

On Thursday, a string of bomb attacks in and around the Iraqi capital killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 60 others.

Militants have increased their efforts to destabilize Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government in recent months by sparking inter-communal violence.

Sectarian violence in Iraq has fallen since reaching a high in 2007, but bombings targeting Shia areas are still common. - See more at: http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2013/03/03/291686/bomb-blast-hits-heart-of-iraqs-karbala/#sthash.4dqPPKCH.dpuf
