100,000 Iranian Pilgrims to Attend Arbaeen Ceremonies in Karbala
Masud Akhavan predicted that the number of Iranians attending the Arbaeen ceremonies near the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) will exceed 100000.

Arbaeen marks the anniversary of the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his faithful companions in Karbala.

He said the Iraqi pilgrims will enter the holy city on foot as no cars are allowed in Karbala during the mourning period, but agreements have been made with Iraqi officials to allow Iranian pilgrims to go to the city by Bus.

About 16 million devotees of Imam Hussein (AS) were present in Karbala on the day of Arbaeen last, year, Akhavan said, adding that according to the predictions made by the Iraqi officials, this number will rise to 20 to 24 million pilgrims this year.

On the safety of the pilgrims, Akhavan noted that since a few months ago, the Iraqi government has been planning to ensure security and safety in the holy city for the months of Muharram and Safar, especially for Arbaeen.

He said one could not guarantee 100-percent security but hoped there will be no unpleasant incident in the city during Arbaeen ceremonies.
