Iraq: Iran To Build Power Plant For Shia Muslims in Karbala

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Iran is to build a 163-MW power plant in neighboring Iraq to meet the requirements of Shia Muslim's holy city of Karbala, an Iranian energy official said on Sunday.

"The credit allocated for construction of the power plant amounts to EUR 75 million, and its first phase with the credit of EUR 25 million will come into operation soon," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted the official as saying.

Electricity generated by the power plant will be used in the Shia shrines of Karbala in southern Iraq and the surplus sold to the Iraqi government, the report added.

Thousands of Iranians visit the Karbala shrines every year despite bomb attacks targeting Shia pilgrims.
