Security and medical sources say at least 17 people have been killed and dozens of others wounded in separate bombing and shooting incidents across Iraq as the nation is celebrating the Eid al-Adha holiday.
On Saturday, in the district of Maamal, in east of the capital, Baghdad, at least five people including three children and a woman died after a bomb went off in a neighborhood market at around 9:00 a.m. (0600 GMT). A total of 13 others were wounded in the attack.
In another incident, five people were killed and 12 others wounded after a magnetic “sticky bomb” attached to a minibus carrying pilgrims in the town of Taji, 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of Baghdad, exploded.
The doctors warned that the toll could rise. The attack took place at 9:30 a.m. (0630 GMT).
Meanwhile in Mosul, 350 kilometers (220 miles) north of Baghdad, a total of seven people were killed and 10 others sustained injuries in three attacks, security and medical officials said.
Bombings and shootings have recently increased across Iraq, and many believe that the attacks are being carried out to undermine the central government.
Early on Friday morning, gunmen opened fire at a police checkpoint in the town of Buhriz, some 60 kilometers (35 miles) north of Baghdad, killing two policemen and injuring two others.
In the evening, a car bomb attack left two worshippers dead and six others wounded near a Shia mosque in the town of al-Mahawil, which is located 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of the capital.
