Samajwadi Party expels Shia Waqf Board corporator Wasim Rizvi

LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party on Thursday expelled former SP corporator Wasim Rizvi on charges of anti-party activities and indiscipline. Rizvi, who at present is the officiating head of Shia Waqf Board, has also been suspended for six years from the party's primary membership. His expulsion is being seen as an attempt by the SP to please Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad, who has been at loggerheads with Rizvi. The most publicised clash of the two was on the issue of alleged encroachment of Waqf land.
The two had come out in the open with their daggers drawn after Rizvi joined the BSP and later appointed the chairman of the waqf board. This resulted in unceremoniously dislodging the then chairman of the board Kamaluddin Akbar (a relative of Kalbe Jawwad). Wasim switched his political loyalties to SP a few months before UP elections only to ensure that he was on the right side of the power. As a result, Wasim managed to retain his post as chairman of the Waqf board.
As the two sides continued levelling charges against each other, Maulana Kalbe Jawwad organised a Shia Mahasammelan on May 6 at the Asafi Imambara, which was attended by cabinet minister Shivpal Yadav who was understandably impressed by the thousands of Shia Muslims who attended the function. Days before the sammelan, Maulana also announced that he would take out a protest march to culminate in a meeting outside the residence of the chief minister Akhilesh Yadav against the alleged anomalies being committed by the Shia Waqf Board.
The government, in no mood to displease any section of the society at least before the 2014 general elections, went on a defensive. District magistrate of Lucknow called upon Jawwad requesting him to cancel the protest march. The procession was taken out, but midway at Hazratganj and the government agreed to order a CB-CID probe into the waqf functioning under the chairmanship of Wasim. Subsequently Wasim resigned from the post of chairman, but was asked to continue as the officiating chairman till an alternative arrangement is made. This too did not go down well with Maulana who once again announced a protest march to the CM residence on the day of Alvida - the last Friday of the month of Ramzan, which witnesses big crowds.
Already facing the flak for its failure to handle the communal riots in Bareilly with the required seriousness, the government appears to be in no mood to leave the community agitated and open another front for the government to handle. As a result, the SP government decided to pacify Maulana Jawwad by sacking Wasim from the party itself. Though there was no news of Maulana Jawwad announcing cancellation of the protest march planned for Alvida, sources said the Imam has agreed in principle not to take out the protest march after SP expelled Rizvi.
