Gileem Juloos in Lucknow commemorates Hazrat Ali’s martyrdom

Lucknow: The traditional Gileem Juloos in memory of Hazrat Ali was taken out by the Shia Muslims in old city of Lucknow on 19th of Ramzan. The procession symbolises the incident when Hazrat Ali, nephew and son-in-law of the Prophet (PBUH) was wounded and was brought covered with blanket. Hazrat Ali had martyrdom three days after this incident. Gileem means blanket and the procession included a taboot covered with blanket.

The procession is part of the 1999 tripartite agreement between Shias, Sunnis and District Administration. Nine processions are permitted for Shias while one procession is permitted for Sunnis.
As per the tradition the Gileem Juloos originated in the morning from Masjid-e-Kufa in Kazmain (Saadatganj) after namaaz-e-Fajr (morning prayers) and culminated at Imambara Syed Mohd Taqi opposite Pata Nala police station around 8 am.
The procession included large number of Shia Muslims who mourned the incident. The procession passed through Victoria Street, Girdhari Lal Inter College crossing, Nakhas, Bajaja before culminating at Imambara Syed Mohd Taqi. Earlier only males were part of the procession. At the culmination the taboot with gileem was handed over to the women.
To keep an eye on mischief- mongers, security personnel were deployed on high-rises along the way. The district administration had divided the Old City areas into four zones and twelve sectors for security arrangements.
