IIC condemns the bombing attack that took place in the city of Najaf, Iraq near the office of Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Fayadh.

A security source said Sunday that "a bomb exploded this evening ... near the office of Grand [Ayatollah] Fayad, without causing casualties, and the ... blast [caused] material damage to a number of civilian properties, near the office, on a street [in] the old city center of Najaf." An attack on any innocent person can not accomplish any legitimate goal, and in particular, an attack on a religious scholar is clearly aimed at inciting sectarian hatred. Although current reports indicate that no one was harmed, the worldwide community must take steps to prevent future attacks against all peoples.

Grand Ayatollah Fayadh

Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Ishaq al-Fayyad (born in 1930) is currently the one of the eminent Shi'a Marja living in Iraq, and one of the four Marja residing in Najaf.

Born in a village in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan to Hazara parents, his family were farmers and he started learning the Qur'an from the village cleric when he was five. When he was 10 his family moved to Najaf where he studied various Islamic studies including Arabic language, rhetoric, logic, Islamic philosophy, the Hadith and Islamic jurisprudence, eventually studying under Grand Ayatollah Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei. When Grand Ayatollah al-Khoei died in 1992 he supported Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani as the chair of the marjaiya in Najaf.

The people of Iraq continue suffer from terrorism, as countless Muslims are hurt or killed indiscriminately daily, by people who are supposedly acting in the name of religion. IIC condemns all acts of terrorism as deplorable crimes against humanity, as they are completely reprehensible, and there is no legitimate reason for them to occur. Islam is a religion that advocates peace and tranquility amongst all peoples, and for any innocent individual to be harmed, is completely against the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
