Hate preacher, Al-Arifi who calls for jihad in Syria is beaten in London

After giving his devil's sermon to recruit killers for Syria yesterday in London, "Al-Arifi" decided to have lunch in Oxford Street at a McDonalds Restaurant, which according to reports upon exiting with his 3 body guards assigned to him from the Mosque, became involved in an attack by Iraqi men, who attacked one of the guards, while the other took the opportunity to repeatedly beat "Al-Arifi" with his shoe on his head and nose

Al-Arifi is getting criticized for calling for jihad in Syria and then heading for London instead of fighting it. But he is just imitating Muhammad, who also exhorted Muslims to wage jihad and get killed in the process but didn't do that himself: "The Prophet said, 'By Him in Whose Hands my life is! Were it not for some men amongst the believers who dislike to be left behind me and whom I cannot provide with means of conveyance, I would certainly never remain behind any Sariya' (army-unit) setting out in Allah's Cause. By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I would love to be martyred in Allah's Cause and then get resurrected and then get martyred, and then get resurrected again and then get martyred and then get resurrected again and then get martyred.'" (Bukhari 4.52.54)

Anyway, this preacher of violence and hatred got into Britain with no problem and no controversy. The controversy is over whether Pamela Geller and I, who do not preach violence or hatred, will be allowed in.

Al-Arifi also backs wife-beating. "Fight or flight? Saudi cleric heads to London after call for Jihad in Syria," from Al Arabiya, June 22 (thanks to Voice of the Copts):
A Saudi cleric has been criticized for currently spending time in London, only weeks after he urged Muslim youth to join Jihad in Syria.

Sheikh Mohamed al-Arifi, a leading Saudi preacher, called for jihad in Syria “in every possible way” during a high-level meeting of Muslim scholars in Cairo on June 14.

But the Saudi preacher, instead of translating his words into action and providing a model for Jihadist wannabes in Syrian frontlines, has chosen to shine elsewhere.

Recently he has been spotted in the streets of London, which he previously described as "a place where Muslims should not go to during times of crisis."

In London, he sometime threw off his white Thobe, the traditional Saudi dress, and embraced more modern attire.

Not so many pictures of him in London are available, but the few ones that came out showed the cleric in a white shirt and a jacket.

However, the sheikh claims he is on a business trip. He went to London to shoot his new television program "My Trip with al-Arifi" to be screened during the Muslim month of Ramadan on the religious “Iqra” television station, the Saudi Okaz daily reported.

The newspaper said the television will be shooting several programs around Europe this year, including Arifi’s show.

On his upcoming program, the Saudi cleric will address religious diversity in Britain as he meets Muslim youth to promote peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims.

He has already begun pushing his agenda on the social media. “I've mixed with the British public in London & found them to be pleasant, polite & respectful towards all religions," Arifi tweeted on Thursday to his more than five million followers.

"The Law in UK treats British Muslims with fairness. Muslims should reflect a true image of their religion through their dealing," Arifi added on Twitter.

He is due to take part in a charity television event from London, focusing on presenting several reports about the Syrian refugees in Jordan.

However, Arifi’s call for Jihad and subsequent travel to London exposed him to harsh criticism back home.

Saudi journalist Mohamed Suhaimi described clerics like Arifi as propaganda artists who talk the talk, but do not walk the walk.

But the media cleric has got a response to that.

He re-tweeted on Wednesday a statement by the Syria Army (FSA) saying: "Frankly, we do not care about your differences with Sheikh al-Arifi as long as we Syrians know what he has done for our sake…God bless him…What have you done?"

The Sheikh also re-tweeted a statement attacking Al Arabiya television for reporting on his travel to London.

“The channel was surprised when al-Arifi offered them his busy schedule in London," the tweet said.

Al-Arifi’s televised fatwas and twitter statements have regularly been a source of contention among religious and political circles.

Wahhabism is a Blasphemy Under the Cover of Islam and Atheism with the Face of Faith

On his jurisprudence courses held in the Grand mosque of Qom, Grand Ayatollah Vahid Khorasani mentioned the excommunicator Wahhabists’ crime and exhumation of Hojr ibn Adi and said: “Blasphemy and atheism destroyed the holy grave of this grand companion of holy prophet in Damascus hand in hand”.

He added: “Ibn al-Athir quotes that once Ayesha asked Muawiyah with bitterness about the reason behind killing of Hojr ibn Adi. “O Mother of believers! I killed him for the interest of Islam” said Muawiyah. “You killed someone” said Ayesha “about whom the prophet once said: “Hojr and his followers will be killed by [a group of people] who are Muslim and worshipers of God and [in result] all from heaven will get angry””

The grand Ayatollah indicated that Wahhabism is a blasphemy under the cover of Islam and atheism with the face of faith and wondered: “Is the Saudi Wahhabism capable of taking responsibility of such action?”

“Why such grave should be demolished unlike the Fatwa of Abu-Hanifa, Malek, Shafei and Ibn-Hanbal” he said.

The grand Ayatollah then stressed out that blasphemy and atheism are hand in hand to pressure Shiite and said: “The one whose grave got desecrated was someone whose Du’a would never remain unanswered according to Ibn al-Athir”.

Ayatollah Vahid Khorasani also mentioned the holiness of the Rajab month and the first Friday night of it which is the night of wishes and insisted: “Pray for the Syrian and Bahraini Muslims in the Night of wishes so God rid them out of atheists and infidels. This is the duty of all of us”.

Assailants set Shiite building on fire in southern Jordan

[5/3/2013 3:47:14 PM]

AMMONNEWS - Dozens of local residents in the southern governorate of Karak on Friday set ablaze a building belonging to the Shi'ite Bohra sect.

Angry residents set the building on fire in the Southern Mazar region, expressing rejection of the presence of the Bohra in the area and refusing to allow visitors from the sect to the region. The Bohra are a subsect of Shi'a Isma'ili Muslims, mostly prominent in India and some in Yemen.

Nearly 300 people stormed the building and set it on fire, Ammon News Correspondent in Karak Mohammad Khawaldeh said.

Khawaldeh added that the local residents also demand shutting down another building that is under construction, reportedly belonging to the sect.

The residents expressed rejection of any attempts of expansion by Bohra Shi'as in the southern governorate, some 120 kilometers south of Amman, which is home to several tombs and shrines revered by Shi'a Muslims and attract visitors from throughout the world, especially predominately Shi'a countries.

Solemn prayers echoed around mosques in Al-Mazar near the southern city of Karak. The town, some 120 kilometers (72 miles) south of the capital Amman, is home to centuries-old tombs revered by Shiites that attract visitors from around the kingdom, Iraq and Lebanon.

After setting the building on fire, assailants also prevented Civil Defense Department (CDD) cadres and fire trucks from reaching the fire to contain it.

CDD cadres evacuated a Shi'a family from the building, including parents and children reportedly of southeast Asian descent.

No casualties were reported, police said.

Tensions occasionally arise in the southern governorate with mostly Sunni local residents threatening to take action to destroy a Husainiya that was reportedly being built in southern Mazar. Last year, residents complained to the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs to investigate the building of the Shi'a shrine, threatening to take matters into their own hands and demolish the building if the government does not take action.

Salafi cleric in Saudi calls for savage killing of Shia women and children

Imam_Muhammad_bin_Saud_Islamic_University_160220123019

The Saudi Wahhabi cleric and the faculty member at the Islamic University of Imam Muhammad bin Saud, Dr. Saad al-Durihim, called Iraqi Mujahideen (al Qaeda terrorist groups) to kill Shiite women and children in order to cause more terror and fear among Iraqi people.
Dr. Saad al-Durihim, in his Twitter called Mujahideen to increase cruelty and murder or even captive women and children to scare more people.
Following the publication of these hatred decrees by the Saudi Wahhabi cleric in Twitter, the flood of criticism followed and some even called him a criminal.
In response to these extremist and sectarian expressions, the writer of al-Medina newspaper wrote, I take Allah as witness that really those who insult Islam are not Christians, Jews or Zarathustras but like these extremists who invite to killing and bloodsheds.
The writer in Akkaz newspaer, Abdullah Bin Bakhit, criticized al-Durihim and wrote: “When this person go free without any trial, we should not be surprise that terrorists live in Saudi Arabia.
A Saudi writer, Muhammad al Omar said in his twitter that “Offender Saad al-Durihim ordered to kill Shiite women and children but we had never seen in the commandments of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him”.
Halima Muzzafar from Alwatan Newspaper asked for trial and the expulsion of Saad al-Durihim from university. She also asked the Saudi Interior Ministry to put al-Durihim on trial and said these extremist thoughts will lead to terrorism and murders in the name of Islam. She also wrote that Mohammad bin Saud is a criminal and must be expelled from the Sharia University.
Saudi Wahhabi clerics use social media to spread terrorism and anti- Shi’ism. They use Islam as a tool to reach their political goals. Saudi Arabia has been the wealthiest anti- Shia government that uses its money and power in the Middle East to oppress Shia Muslims. History of Islam proves Prophet of Islam never permitted killings due to ideological or religious differences. Saudi clerics must identify the source of their believes since their model does not exist in history of Islam.

Hypocrites: Dancing Saudi Wahhabi scholars

Dancing Saudi Wahhabi scholars
According to Al-Alam, Adel al-kalbani in a TV program said: “some of the Saudi missionaries, have double standards \[hypocrites], they say something in the country, and say something else outside of the country.”

He added: “I went to a ceremony outside of the country, with a group of scholars who have banned even hand clapping, and I saw them that they were listening to music and took part in the dance.”

Al-Kalbani continued: “I was with Abdulrahman Al-Ashmawi in this event; he asked me, why you didn’t dance? I told him I do not dance.”

Al-Kalbani reiterated that: “some of the brothers, who have always argued with me about the singing and dancing being sinful act, were at the event and danced.”

Al-Kalbani added: “I tell those missionaries; whatever you consider sinful in Riyadh, it must be sinful in the US too!”

Indonesian Authorities Cut Off Food and Water to Hundreds of Shia Muslims

Indonesian Authorities Cut Off Food and Water to Hundreds of Shia Muslims
At least 190 displaced Shi’a followers in East Java, including 69 women and 61 children, are at risk after local government authorities halted supplies of food and water to the community, citing a lack of funds.

The Shi’a community, from Karang Gayam village in the Sampang district on Madura island, were displaced in August 2012 when an anti-Shi’a mob of around 500 people attacked the community with sharp weapons and stones.
One person was martyred and dozens were injured. The mob also set fire to thirty-five houses belonging to the Shi’a community. Four people have since been charged for the attack.

Following the attack, the community was moved to temporary shelter at a sports complex in Sampang - with minimal facilities - where they have been living for the last three months.
No medicine or facilities specifically for children or women have been provided.
On 18 November, the local authorities cut off water supply to the complex and on 22 November they halted food supplies.
The displaced community have been forced to use their limited funds to purchase food and water.

According to credible sources, some of the Shi’a followers at the complex have been intimidated and harassed by local government officials who have urged them to convert to Sunni Islam if they want to return to their homes.
Local and national authorities continue to put pressure on the community to relocate but they have rejected this option, preferring to return to their homes and livelihoods under conditions of safety.
A group of volunteers have been assisting them with their daily needs and providing counselling, particularly to women and children.

Please write immediately in English, Indonesian or your own language calling on authorities in Indonesia:
To ensure the displaced Shi’a community has immediate access to essential services such as food and clean drinking water in their shelter;
To guarantee the safe, voluntary and dignified return of the Shi’a community to their homes, according to their wishes, and to provide assistance so as to enable them to rebuild the homes that were damaged or destroyed;
To investigate reports that the local government authorities in Sampang District have been involved in the intimidation of Shi’a followers to renounce their faith;
To ensure that all those involved in the attack against the Shi’a community are speedily brought to justice in proceedings which meet international standards of fairness and without the imposition of the death penalty and that victims are provided reparations.

URGENT ACTION AUTHORITIES CUT OFF FOOD AND WATER TO SHI’AS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
There have been increasing levels of harassment, intimidation and attacks against religious minority groups in Indonesia including Shi’a, Ahmadiyya and Christian communities.
These include attacks and burning of homes and places of worship, at times leading to the displacement of these groups. Those who commit acts of violence against religious minorities are rarely punished.

Amnesty International is particularly concerned that government authorities – as well as the police – are failing to protect these communities and, in some cases, actively taking part in their persecution.
These include attempts by government officials to force religious minorities, such as Ahmadiyya and Shi’a followers, to denounce their beliefs.

The Shi’a community on Madura island has been intimidated and attacked before. On 29 December 2011, a mob set fire to a place of worship, a boarding school and to various homes in the vicinity.
Police did not take adequate measures to protect the community and instead of intervening to stop the attack, some recorded it on their phones. Only one person was eventually charged and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for the attack.

In July 2012 Tajul Muluk, a religious leader from the East Java Shi’a community, was arrested and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for blasphemy under Article 156(a) of the Indonesian Criminal Code by the Sampang District Court.
His arrest followed reports that on 1 January 2012, a religious decree (fatwa) was issued by the Sampang branch of the Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI) related to what was described as Tajul Muluk’s “deviant teachings”.
The East Java High Court increased his sentence to four years in September 2012 upon appeal.
Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience and calls for his immediate and unconditional release.

The right to freedom of religion is guaranteed in the Indonesian Constitution.
Moreover, Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Indonesia is a state party, states that “this right shall include freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice” and that “no one shall be subject to coercion which would impair his freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice”.

WE ARE COMPLETELY AGAINST THE GROWTH OF TERRORISIM AND AL-QAIDA

Ayatullah Basheer Najafi
His eminence (may Allah prolong his life) has indicated that the human spirit can be affected by the whereabouts of guidance and spiritual clearness as it is mentioned in the holy Quran and the honored Hadith. Therefore, I have always loved Najaf and wished this love for others, for this city has got a spiritual atmosphere distinct from any place in the world. It is the place which contains Hawza which is unmatched all over the world in terms of quality.

Afterwards, his eminence (may Allah prolong his life) has talked with the representative of the Red Cross in Najaf, saying: "freedom, justice and equality are the most important teachings of orthodox Islam. Thus, the Western world should pay attention to this conception and use it impartially. For example, the issue of women's hijab could not even some of the political claims prevent it legally in one of the Western world countries because their exponents have become aware of that the Virgin Mary (AS) was veiled. Accordingly, Muslim woman cannot be forced to take off the hijab. However, France did not heed this wisdom, nor did they respect what has been called for freedom of thought and religion, forcing Muslim women to remove the veil. At the same time, there must be freedom of belief."

Furthermore, his eminence (may Allah prolong his life) has expressed his regret for what is going on in the world concerning the killings, destruction, and blood shedding. His eminence has asserted that we are against any growth to al- Qaida and terrorism in any place in the world. The Red Crescent and Red Cross are among the important humanitarian phenomena that have been established in the Islam and Christianity world, his eminence has added. Consequently, this is an approaching sign between Muslims and Christens, whereas Judaism did not establish such a humanitarian projects.

As far as the delegation are concerned, they have presented many questions about the Islamic theory of life, justice and judgment, where his eminence, with open-mindedness, has answer them. In regard to what is going on in Syria, his eminence (may Allah prolong his life) has stated: "We are not with any situation which might lead for the growth of terrorism and al-Qaeda anywhere in the world, and what is happening in Syria is to transplant the agendas of regional and foreign states seeking to destabilize the security of the region through the deployment of Wahabisim and trying of re- existence of Qaeda after failing in Iraq..

The delegation have also presented a lot of the work done in Iraq and the region, chief among them are helping those affected and trying to stop this crisis through negotiations. In conclusion, they have thanked Allah (Almighty) for enabling them to know Najaf and authentic Islamic belief, and for such meeting that presents Najaf in a civilized image of Islam filled with humanity and urbanization.

Bahrain security forces attack pro-democracy Shia protesters

c_330_235_16777215_0___images_stories_edim_01_bahrain3(1).jpgSaudi-backed Bahraini forces have attacked demonstrators protesting against the Al Khalifa regime across the Persian Gulf country.

The regime forces on Wednesday used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the protesters in the capital, Manama, the northeastern island of Sitra, the northern village of Tubli and the western village of Sadad, Press TV reported.

The demonstrators also expressed solidarity with leading opposition figures and condemned the recent verdicts against them.

The protests came after a Bahraini civilian court on Tuesday upheld jail sentences against at least 13 opposition leaders.

The jail terms, seven of them life sentences, were previously issued by a military court.

Human rights activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja and opposition leader Hassan Mushaimaa are among those sentenced to life in prison.

On August 23, a Bahraini appeals court upheld a three-year prison term for prominent rights activist Nabeel Rajab over taking part in “unauthorized protests.”

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of anti-government protesters have been staging regular demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates invaded the country to assist the Bahraini government in its crackdown on the peaceful protesters.

According to local sources, scores of people have been killed and hundreds arrested in the crackdown.

Physicians for Human Rights says doctors and nurses have been detained, tortured, or disappeared because they have "evidence of atrocities committed by the authorities, security forces, and riot police" in the crackdown on anti-government protesters.

Salafists target historic madrassa in central Tripoli

Salafists target historic madrassa in central TripoliSalafists have destroyed almost 30 graves at an historic madrassa in central Tripoli, in the latest spate of religiously-motivated violence to hit Libya.

The Othman Pasha madrassa, named after its Turkish founder, was attacked by scores of armed men in the early hours of this morning, who used automatic drills to dig up the graves and looted several historic texts from the school’s library.

The madrassa also serves as a boarding school.

“They came around 2am. There were about 200 of them and they were heavily armed”, one of the madrassa’s staff told the Libya Herald.

“They destroyed all the graves except two, and we think they will come back for those. There are around 30 graves, in which Othman Pasha and his family are buried”.

The man, who asked not to be named, said the Salafists were intending to take all the books from the madrassa’s library, but were persuaded not to by dismayed members of staff.

“They took about half of the books”, he said.

Over the past week, Libya has been rocked by a series of violent attacks perpetrated by Salafists on religious sites they consider idolatrous.

Three historic Sufi shrines have been targeted, in Zliten, Misrata and Tripoli, and it is reported that a number of mosques in Tripoli’s Old City have also been attacked in the past few days.

Throughout the assaults, the Supreme Security Committee, the body tasked with maintaining Libya’s internal security, has done little if anything to prevent the destruction.

It has been widely reported that leading members within the organisation sympathise with the Salafists’ objectives.

Grand Shia Cleric 'Makarem' Condemned Silence Against Wahhabis Crimes

Grand Shia Cleric Grand Iranian Shia cleric, Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi reproved the silence of Islamic Scholars against the crimes of Wahhabis.

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi urged Islamic scholars and religious cleric not to capitulate and let Wahhabis keep destroying the historical and religious places in Saudi Arabia.

The enemies of Islam try to obfuscate the history of Islam via destroying the religious places, but the point is that “in other parts of the world governments make huge investment for repairing the historical places,” said the senior cleric.

“They invite people to visit these places which are the emblem of their culture and civilizations,” Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi underscored.

Wahhabis’ minds are impervious to reasoning so the senior cleric underscored that the Islamic scholars should stand against such hermetic minds and force them to reconstruct the places.

These religious places do not belong to Wahhabis; they belonged to all Muslims around the world so it is incumbent upon each scholar to reprove such blasphemous act.

Two Killed as Hard-liners Attack Shia School Group

Two people were killed and five were injured in an attack on a group of Shia students and teachers in Sampang, East Java, on Sunday.

Around 30 Shiites, most of them children, were traveling from Nangkernang village on the island of Madura, bound for Bangil in East Java.

Shortly into their trip, they were stopped by about 500 men from mainstream Muslim groups, preventing them from continuing, said Umi Kulsum, who was at the scene.

“Two people died, Hamama and Tohir,” she said. “Five were wounded as they were trying to protect the women and children. I was petrified.

“When the incident happened, there weren’t any police officers. The mob had swords and machetes, and they attacked all of the adult males who were trying to protect the women and children.”

Among the group were five of Umi’s children, who were taken away from her.

The children in the group studied at a Shia boarding school in Bangil and had returned to Sampang, their hometown, to celebrate Idul Fitri with their families.

The mob then torched four homes belonging to the Shiite community, including one belonging to Umi and her husband, Shia cleric Tajul Muluk.

The Shia community in Sampang has been the target of violent attacks and incidents of intimidation in the past.

On Dec. 29, Shiites in Nangkernang was attacked by hard-line Muslim groups, who set fire to hundreds of homes and a Shia Islamic school, displacing 500 Shiites from their village.

Police instead charged Tajul with blasphemy, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs office in Sampang said it would “supervise” hundreds of Shia to learn Sunni Islam.

Last month, a district court in East Java sentenced the Shia cleric to two years in prison for blasphemy after reportedly telling students that the Koran was not the original holy text for Muslims, an allegation Tajul’s legal team repeatedly denied.

According to Tajul’s lawyers, the prosecutors in the case portrayed the Shiite faith as subservient to the Sunni majority, helping to raise the religious tensions during the proceedings.

New York-based Human Rights Watch called on the government to drop all charges against Tajul and demanded that it amend or repeal its blasphemy law.

With the ongoing tension and intimidation against the group, Umi said she had requested police come to ensure a safe passage for the convoy of children, but police never came. Hours after the incident, eight police officers arrived at the scene.

East Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Hilman Thayib said police deployed 300 officers from precincts across Madura to Nangkernang, as well as one company from the East Java Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) unit to prevent violence.

Umi identified the attackers as followers of Roisul Hukama, a local Nahdlatul Ulama leader who has been fanning hatred toward the local Shia community.

“How many lives must fall until police and the government intervene?” Umi asked.

“Our children have stopped going to school for five months. My husband is in jail, and my whole life is under terror.”

House of Representatives member Eva Kusuma Sundari, from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), condemned the attack.

“There must not be anymore victims,” she said. “Police must move quickly and safeguard the security and safety of the people attacked.”

Of the 220 million Muslims in the country, there are only around one million Shiites, according to estimates. Most of the rest practice some form of Sunni Islam.

The Freedom of Religion and Faith Advocacy Working Group (AKBB) said that Sunnis and Shiites follow different interpretations of Islam that have been accepted by Muslim groups around the globe since the beginning of the religion in the eighth century.

Intimidation toward and attacks on Shiites have also been recorded in Pasuruan and Bangil, both in East Java.

HISTORY OF THE CEMETERY OF JANNAT AL-BAQI

WHERE IMAM HASAN B. ALI (2ND IMAM), IMAM ALI B. AL-HUSAYN (4TH IMAM), IMAM

MUHAMMAD B. ALI (5TH IMAM), & IMAM JA'FAR B. MUHAMMAD (6TH IMAM), PEACE BE UPON THEM, ARE BURIED

On 8th Shawwal, Wednesday, in the year 1345 AH (April 21, 1925), mausoleums in Jannatul al-Baqi (Madina) weredemolished by King Ibn Saud.

In the same year (1925), he also demolished the tombs of holy personages at Jannat al-Mualla (Makkah) where the Holy Prophet's mother, wife, grandfather and other ancestors are buried.

Destruction of sacred sites in Hijaz by the Saudi Wahhabis continues even today. According to some scholars what is happening in Hijaz is actually a conspiracy plotted by the Jews against Islam, under the guise of Tawheed. The idea is to eradicate the Islamic legacy and heritage and to systematically remove all its vestiges so that in the days
to come, Muslims will have no affiliation with their religious history.

The Origins of Al-Baqi

Literally "al-Baqi" means a tree garden. It is also known as "Jannat al-Baqi" due to its sanctity, since in it are buried many of our Prophet's relatives and companions.

The first companion buried in al-Baqi was Uthman b. Madhoon who died on the 3rd of Sha'ban in the 3rd year of Hijrah. The Prophet (s) ordered certain trees to be felled, and in its midst, he buried his dear companion, placing two stones over the grave.

On the following years, the Prophet's son Ibrahim, who died in infancy and over whom the Prophet (s) wept bitterly, was also buried there. The people of Madina then began to use that site for the burial of their own dead, because the Prophet (s) used to greet those who were buried in al-Baqi by saying, "Peace be upon you, O abode of the faithful! God willing, we should soon join you. O' Allah, forgive the fellows of al-Baqi".

The site of the burial ground at al-Baqi was gradually extended. Nearly seven thousand companions of the Holy Prophet (s) were buried there, not to mention those of the Ahlul Bayt (a). Imam Hasan b. Ali (a), Imam Ali b. al-Husayn (a), ImamMuhammad al-Baqir (a), and Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a) were all buried there.

Among other relatives of the Prophet (s) who were buried at al-Baqi are: his aunts Safiya and Aatika, and his aunt Fatima bint al-Asad, the mother of Imam Ali (a). The third caliph Uthman was buried outside al-Baqi, but with later extensions, his grave was included in the area. In later years, great Muslim scholars like Malik bin Anas and many others, were buried there too. Thus, did al-Baqi become a well-known place of great historic significance to all Muslims.

Al-Baqi as viewed by historians

Umar bin Jubair describes al-Baqi as he saw it during his travel to Madina, saying "Al-Baqi is situated to the east of Madina. You enter it through the gate known as the gate of al-Baqi. As you enter, the first grave you see on your left is that of Safiya, the Prophet's aunt, and further still is the grave of Malik bin Anas, the Imam of Madina. On his grave is raised a small dome. In front of it is the grave of Ibrahim son of our Prophet (s) with a white dome over it, and next to it on the right is the grave of Abdul-Rahman son of Umar bin al-Khattab, popularly known as Abu Shahma, whose father had kept punishing him till death overtook him. Facing it are the graves of Aqeel bin Abi Talib and Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Tayyar. There, facing those graves is a small shrine containing the graves of the Prophet's wives, following by a shrine of Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib.

The grave of Hasan bin Ali (a), situated near the gate to it's right hand, has an elevated dome over it. His head lies at the feet of Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, and both graves are raised high above the ground, their walls are panelled with yellow plates and studded with beautiful star-shaped nails. This is how the grave of Ibrahim, son of the Prophet (s) has also been adorned. Behind the shrine of Abbas there is the house attributed to Fatima, daughter of our Prophet (s), known as "Bayt al-Ahzaan" (the house of grief) because it is the house she used to frequent in order to mourn the death of her father, the chosen one, peace be upon him. At the farthest end of al-Baqi is the grave of the caliph Uthman, with a small dome over it, and there, next to it, is the grave of Fatima bint Asad, mother of Ali b. Abi Talib (a)"

After a century and a half, the famous traveller Ibn Batuta came to describe al-Baqi in a way which does not in any way differ from the description given by Ibn Jubair. He adds saying, "At al-Baqi are the graves of numerous Muhajirin and Ansar and many companions of the Prophet (s), except that most of their names are unknown."

Thus, over the centuries, al-Baqi remained a sacred site with renovations being carried out as and when needed till the Wahhabis rose to power in the early nineteenth century. The latter desecrated the tombs and demonstrated disrespect to the martyrs and the companions of the Prophet (s) buried there. Muslims who disagreed with them were branded as "infidels" and were subsequently killed.

The First Destruction of Al-Baqi

The Wahhabis believed that visiting the graves and the shrines of the Prophets, the Imams, or the saints was a form of idolatry and totally un-Islamic. Those who did not conform with their belief were killed and their property was confiscated. Since their first invasion of Iraq, and till nowadays, in fact, the Wahhabis, as well as other rulers of the Gulf States, having been carrying out massacres from which no Muslim who disagreed with them was spared. Obviously, the rest of the Islamic World viewed those graves with deep reverence. Had it not been so, the two caliphs Abu Bakr and Umar would not have expressed their desire for burial near the grave of the Prophet (s).

From 1205 AH to 1217 AH, the Wahhabis made several attempts to gain a foothold in Hijaz but failed. Finally, in 1217 AH, they somehow emerged victorious in Taif where they spilled the innocent blood of Muslims. In 1218 AH, they entered Makkah and destroyed all sacred places and domes there, including the one which served as a canopy over the well of Zamzam.

In 1221, the Wahhabis entered Madina to desecrate al-Baqi as well as every mosque they came across. An attempt was even made to demolish the Prophet's tomb, but for one reason or another, the idea was abandoned. In subsequent years, Muslims from Iraq, Syria, and Egypt were refused entry into Makkah for Hajj. King Al-Saud set a pre-condition that those who wished to perform the pilgrimage would have to accept Wahhabism or else be branded as non-Muslims, becoming ineligible for entry into the Haram.

Al-Baqi was razed to the ground, with no sign of any grave or tomb whatsoever. But the Saudis were still not quite satisfied with doing all of that. Their king ordered three black attendants at the Prophet's shrine to show him where the treasure of valuable gifts were stored. The Wahhabis plundered the treasure for their own use.

Thousands of Muslims fled Makkah and Madina in a bid to save their lives and escape from the mounting pressure and persecution at the hands of the Wahhabis. Muslims from all over the world denounced this Saudi savagery and exhorted the Caliphate of the Ottoman Empire to save the sacred shrines from total destruction. Then, as it is known, Muhammad Ali Basha attacked Hijaz and, with the support of local tribes, managed to restore law and order in Madina and Makkah, dislodging the Al-Saud clansmen. The entire Muslim world celebrated this victory with great fanfare and rejoicing. In Cairo, the celebrations continued for five days. No doubt, the joy was due to the fact that pilgrims were once more allowed freely to go for Hajj, and the sacred shrines were once again restored.

In 1818 AD, the Ottaman Caliph Abdul Majid and his successors, Caliphs Abdul Hamid and Mohammed, carried out the reconstruction of all sacred places, restoring the Islamic heritage at all important sites. In 1848 and 1860 AD, further renovations were made at the expense of nearly seven hundred thousand pounds, most of which came from the donations collected at the Prophet's tomb.

The second plunder by the Wahhabis

The Ottoman Empire had added to the splendor of Madina and Makkah by building religious structures of great beauty and architectural value. Richard Burton, who visited the holy shrines in 1853 AD disguised as an Afghan Muslim and adopting the Muslim name Abdullah, speaks of Madina boasting 55 mosques and holy shrines. Another English adventurer who visited Madina in 1877-1878 AD describes it as a small beautiful city resembling Istanbul. He writes about its white walls, golden slender minarets and green fields.

1924 AD Wahhabis entered Hijaz for a second time and carried out another merciless plunder and massacre. People in streets were killed. Houses were razed to the ground. Women and children too were not spared.

Awn bin Hashim (Shairf of Makkah) writes: "Before me, a valley appeared to have been paved with corpses, dried blood staining everywhere all around. There was hardly a tree which didn't have one or two dead bodies near its roots."

1925 Madina surrendered to the Wahhabi onslaught. All Islamic heritage were destroyed. The only shrine that remained intact was that of the Holy Prophet (s).

Ibn Jabhan says: "We know that the tomb standing on the Prophet's grave is against our principles, and to have his grave in a mosque is an abominable sin."

Tombs of Hamza and other martyrs were demolished at Uhud. The Prophet's mosque was bombarded. On protest by Muslims, assurances were given by Ibn Saud that it will be restored but  the promise was never fulfilled. A promise was given that Hijaz will have an Islamic multinational government. This was also abandoned.

1925 AD Jannat al-Mu'alla, the sacred cemetery at Makkah was destroyed along with the house where the Holy Prophet (s) was born. Since then, this day is a day of mourning for all Muslims.

Is it not strange that the Wahhabis find it offensive to have the tombs, shrines and other places of importance preserved, while the remains of their Saudi kings are being guarded at the expense of millions of dollars?

Protest from Indian Muslims

1926, protest gatherings were held by shocked Muslims all over the world. Resolutions were passed and a statement outlining the crimes perpetrated by Wahhabis was issued and included the following:

1.The destruction and desecration of the holy places i.e. the birth place of the Holy Prophet [s], the graves of Banu Hashim in Makkah and in Jannat al-Baqi (Madinah), the refusal of the Wahhabis to allow Muslims to recite Ziyarah or Surah-al-Fatiha at those graves.

2.The destruction of the places of worship i.e. Masjid Hamza, Masjid Abu Rasheed, in addition to the tombs of Imams and Sahaba (Prophet's companions).

3.Interference in the performance of Hajj rituals.

4.Forcing the Muslims to follow the Wahhabis innovations and to abandon their own ways according to the guidance of the Imams they follow.

5.The massacre of sayyids in Taif, Madina, Ahsa, and Qatif.

6.The demolition of the grave of the Imams at al-Baqi which deeply offended and grieved all Shias.

Protest from other countries

Similar protests were lodged by Muslims in Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Indonesia, and Turkey. All of them condemn the Saudi Wahhabis for their barbaric acts. Some scholars wrote tracts and books to tell the world the fact that what was happening in Hijaz was actually a conspiracy plotted by the Jews against Islam, under the guise of Tawheed. The idea was to eradicate the Islamic legacy and heritage and to systematically remove all its vestiges so that in the days to come, Muslims will have no affiliation with their religious history.
