Daily Program for the Believer from Morning to Night

1- Start the day with the Fajr or Morning Prayer after performing the nafilah or supplementary Fajr prayer, which acts as a spiritual preparation and prevent laziness and lethargy. It also compensates for any deficiency in the obligatory prayer.
2- Perform Tasbih al-Zahra' directly after prayer, as well as after each of five prayers. Then recite special supplications like those mentioned in the book Mafateeh Al-Jinan. At least once in his life, the believer should recite the supplication of al-Ahd every day for a period of forty days. It is important, however, to stay awake till sunrise, a deed that might increase one's wealth, and to read at least 100 ayats of the Qur'an during this time.
3- Say the Estia'atha, asking God for protection against the Devil and his evils, at the beginning of the day.
4- Promise yourself, as you are going to work or school, not to commit any disobedience during this day. Then observe yourself carefully throughout day time, and finally evaluate your performance before you go to bed!
5- Remind yourself that you are going to work for the sake of God, aiming to obtain financial independence. A woman should choose a workplace where she can avoid mixing with men. Devils and corrupt men are waiting for any chance to hunt women, especially during work time when no barriers are maintained between the sexes.
6- Try always to be under the purity of Wudhu', or ritual ablution, because outward purification leads to inward purification. Renew wudhu' each time it is broken.
7- Give daily sadaqa, or charity, even if it is something small. If you don't find a poor man near you, you can set the money aside till you find one.
8- Say farewell to your family members, asking them to pray for your success, to forgive you for any mistakes, especially your wife, and advise them to do their daily prayers early at the beginning of the recommended times.
9- Don't waste time on your way to work. Take a useful cassette with you, or a walkman, to keep you away from neglectfulness, especially when you are bored of reading and prefer to listen. Holy Qur’an is recommended if you are comfortable with that. In any case, never listen to forbidden things like singing.
10- Choose a specific Dhikr, a word or words of praise, to fill your time. 'Surat at-Tawhid', 'La Ilaha illa allah', and 'Allahumma salli ala Mohammed wa ali Mohammed' are good examples to repeat again and again. After some time, you will find it ridiculous to say things that don't bring any benefit either in this world or the Hereafter!
11- Keep a useful book at your workplace to read in your free time. In general, the believer should always have a valuable library with a variety of books at all levels, including women and children's books, to encourage himself and others to read.
12- Try not to pleasantly chat with neglectful people, especially of the opposite sex. Unnecessary talking and joking are means to fall into more dangerous problems. It is prudent to consider before opening our mouths whether or not we are saying something which satisfies Almighty God.
13- Carry a schedule of prayer times with you, to perform Salat Ad-Dhuhr, the Noon Prayer, which has a distinctive position amidst the swarm of daily business, at the beginning of its time, no matter how busy you are. You should take general permission from your boss in advance to perform your prayers on time. Make the quality of prayer your chief concern rather than its length!
14- Perform Istighfar, seeking forgiveness, 70 times after Asr or Afternoon Prayer, so that Almighty God might forgive 700 of your faults! Read Surat Al-Qadr 10 times, so that you gain the reward of everyone's good deeds that day! Seeking forgiveness, in fact, is the main and constant concern of the believer, especially after an act of disobedience. Istighfar after Afternoon and Night Prayers are two important points, 12 hours apart, that cause the believer to live in continuous purity.
15- Try to contact some of your brothers in your free time, not just for fun, but to achieve the goal of communication with believers and pleasing their hearts.
16- A major problem of sitting with neglectful people is backbiting and insulting others. Try to avoid starting any conversation regarding other persons. Listening to backbiting, as well, is another form of participating in it! Remember the analogy in the Holy Qur'an which considers this act like eating your dead brother's flesh. What a disgusting act!
17- Enter your home with a smile on your face, leaving work's tension outside, to avoid disappointing your wife who is waiting for you in love from early morning, preparing food and comfort to share with you.
18- Consider lunch a divine table at which you are a guest. Don't forget the manners of the same, like being in a state of purification (ablution), eating Halal food, saying Basmala before starting, thanking God after finishing, and other narrated manners in this regard.
19- Check the important news and useful programs during relaxation time, like after lunch. It is necessary to share in the concerns of Muslims, as the one who spends his day not caring about Muslims’ affairs is not a real Muslim! The supplication of al-Faraj is no doubt one way to hasten this nation's rescue and relief.
20- Taking rest after lunch is recommended to relieve the stomach and help digestion. Meanwhile, keep your mind busy with silent prayers or with what you have to do after waking up. Controlling thoughts and imagination is a great door opened towards success!
21- Try to do your shopping and outside duties in the times when there is less of a crowd and mixing between sexes, like in the afternoon. Avoid the markets that are well known for heavy crowds and the mixing of sexes, especially when you have no necessary duties there. Markets are the most hated places to Almighty God, and the most hatred people to Him are those who go there the earliest and leave the latest!
22- Make a special program for the Maghreb or Sunset Prayer. Do not go to a place where you will miss this prayer at the beginning of its time. That would be an uncompensated loss, no matter how much material profit you otherwise gain!
23- The time before sunset is a blessed time. Take advantage of the last quarter an hour to send Salawat or blessings upon the prophet and his Family, may God's peace and blessings be upon them. In addition, you should say the Istia'adha ten times, and other Tasbeeh recommended for this time.
24- If you don't succeed in performing the daily Nawafil of 34 raka'as, you should at least perform Salat Al-Ghufaila - between Maghrib and Isha'a prayers- a special prayer said to lead to Paradise, and the Watira prayer after Isha'a prayer. Do your best to attend congregational prayers in the mosque, if there is one close to your house.
25- If you find yourself in a good spiritual condition after prayer, try to stay in this condition as long as you can, whether in the mosque or at home. Such Divine gifts might not be easily repeated, being the most precious in the existence. If after some time you get used to living in such conditions, you will be living in a state of spiritual tourism that can never be compared to tourism of the material world.
26- Take your dinner early, and make it light so that it won't prevent you from waking up for the Night prayer.
27- You should have an organized program for useful reading. Read books according to a schedule, to finish a course of study in doctrines, exegesis of the Qur'an, history or Hadeeth, in addition to your academic or professional books. Random reading will not improve your culture!
28- Spend enough time with your family and children. Guide them to useful narration and warn them about issues of concern, like the bad effects of the Internet and satellite channels. You can gather your family to read some of the Islamic laws according to the scholar who, you believe, is the most knowledgeable one at this time.
29- Schedule one day or more in the week to accompany your family to a garden, a park or the like to entertain them. Try to be happy and gentle, and avoid all kind of disturbances. Never take them to suspicious places where they would be subject to forbidden looking and mixing. Avoid also visiting suspicious restaurants, which might sell you non-Halal food as Halal!
30- So much of our lives are lost in front of TV, watching everything whether it is good or bad! Just as the believer is careful about what he eats, in the same way he should be careful about what he sees! We will be questioned about the useless things we watch, and needless to say the forbidden things! You must be sure that TV is not a source of corruption to your family while you are away from the house, by using protection codes. Keep away from Internet if there is a possibility of falling into forbidden acts, especially when you are alone, in the middle of the night, or when your desires are stirred.
31- Try to make family visits useful, and avoid going to mixed meetings or neglectful people's houses. If you have to, like for some social reason, do it carefully and quickly, so that your good intention won't end with a forbidden deed! Be cautious to isolate women and men during these visits, as per the instructions of Ahlul-Bayt, may God's peace and blessings be upon them. So many prohibited relationships with women, even married women, have started through such mixed visits, with unlimited chatting and joking.
32- Try to go to bed early, unless you are unable to sleep, for otherwise you might be charmed by delusions and bad thoughts. It is possible that some types of thinking may drag you into forbidden acts, whether in bed or after waking up.
33- There are some narrated recommendations before going to bed, like saying Tasbih Az-Zahra'a, saying Surat At-Tawhid three times, the last verse of Surat Al-Kahf to make you wake up for the Night Prayer - along with preparing an alarm to help you in that -, sleeping in a state of wudhu' or ritual purification, asking Almighty God for forgiveness, sleeping on your right side facing the direction of Qibla, and so on.
34- The hours of sleep should be controlled, because people normally sleep more than they really need, especially on weekends and holidays!
35- Night Prayer, a conversation with Almighty God, is one of the most important worshipping stops, especially in the darkness and with emotional communication. Wake your wife and family members for this stop as well. If you cannot perform it completely, don't miss the three raka'as of Shaf'e and Witr directly before Fajr Prayer. If you even missed this, then compensate for it sometime during the day to show Almighty God your persistence in getting closer to Him.
36- Maintaining ties with relatives does not necessarily mean visiting them. If there is any negative religious influence amongst them, it would be best to ask about them through a phone call!
37- Staying in a good health is something that is recommended by the religion. Try to have a suitable athletic program, without going to suspicious places and participating in prohibited acts. It is recommended, rather, to have such program at home, while listening to something reminds you about Almighty God.
38- You should have an exceptional program for the eve and day of each Friday, repeating salawat upon Mohammed and his Family, may peace and blessings be upon them, whispered prayers, visiting the sick, visiting the graves of the believers, and other useful programs. The Supplication of Kumai is also a main feature on the eve of Friday, and the Supplication of Nudba and the ghusl or ritual shower of Friday are main features during the day on Friday.
39- Seasons of special devotions should be prepared for in advance, through referring to the related books in this regard. It is also important to perform the prayer of the first day of a Hijri month, to obtain security for the entire month. Its method is to recite Surat al-Hamd one time followed by Surat al-Tawhid thirty times in the first rak'a, then recite Surat al-Hamd once and Surat al-Qadr thirty times in the second rak'a. Follow the prayer with the recommended supplication, and give charity for the month.
40- It is very important for the worshipper to devote time in recollecting the tragedies that befell the Holy Family of the Prophet may God's peace and blessings be upon them. The worshipper should especially recollect the tragedies that occured to Imam Hussein and his Family, may peace be upon them, even if it is only once per week. If it is not possible for him to participate in public majlises, then these can be obtained through recordings, and perhaps he will be able to gain an understanding of the event and listen to the observance. It is important not to neglect performing the ziyarat of Imam Hussein, may peace be upon him, on Thursday night. It is one of the opportunities for success, even if from a distance.

Spiritual attachment with the Imam of the Age (a.t.f.s.)

During the period of Ghaibat, it is the responsibility of every being, rather of every believer, that he establishes a spiritual contact with the Imam of the Age (a.t.f.s.). When a person acquires the recognition of the Imam, a unique relationship is established wherein the heart, as per its capacity becomes a reflection of the characteristics and ethics of the Imam (a.t.f.s..).
Allah the Almighty informs us in the Holy Quran,'O those who believe! Be patient and enjoin patience amongst one another and remain in contact. And be careful of your duty to Allah lest you succeed.'(Surah Ale Imran (3): 200)
The above verse has been explained by the Holy Imams (a.s.) in various exegesis of the Holy Quran thus - O those who believe! Remain patient and steadfast during the period of Ghaibat of the Imam of the Age; be steadfast upon the right path as compared to your enemies and remain in contact with the awaited Imam. Obey the laws and regulations of Islam as laid down by Allah for surely in it is your success.(Tafseer al-Burhaan by Sayed Haashem al-Bahraani (r.a.) under the aforementioned verse)
Some people harbor the misconception that since we are living our lives in the period of the major occultation, it is impossible to maintain 'contact' with the Imam and there is no way by which we can have a relationship with the Imam of the Age (a.t.f.s.). It is important that we clarify this point over here.
As regards the traditions that are available on this matter, it is true that during the period of the major occultation, the person who claims that he can meet the Hidden Imam (a.t.f.s.) whenever he desires is a liar. It is equally true, however, that during this period there are numerous instances of people having been blessed by a visit from the Imam (a.t.f.s.), either in person or through a spiritual experience like a dream.
A little attention to this point will clarify all doubts about the matter of contact with the Hidden Imam (a.t.f.s.). For surely this grace - the opportunity to meet the Hidden Imam (a.t.f.s.) - is a direct consequence of the love and benevolence of the Imam (a.t.f.s.) himself.
Secondly, it is not necessary that contact be maintained only by regular meetings in person. A relationship need not be established only through physical contact. Rather, a relationship through spiritual means can also be defined as a contact. In reality, it is the establishment of this spiritual relationship that confirms the distinguished status of a believer.. And this is the relationship that every believer can establish and through which he attains such heights of recognition and eminence that he always perceives himself to be in the honoured presence of the Holy Imam (a.t.f.s.) and conducts himself and his affairs as if he is constantly under the watchful eyes of the Imam (a.t.f.s.). We have the example of Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) who narrates in the 'Supplication on the Day of Friday':
'O Allah, I seek nearness to You through a sincere heart (I consider myself lowly before your Might and Majesty), and to your representative - Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) through an obedient body (my body is subservient to the commands of the Imam and I seek benefit from the parts of my body such that the Imam is pleased with my actions) and to the Holy Imams (a.s.) through a humble heart (I prefer them over myself and seek obedience to them)." (Jamaal al-Usboo', pg. 152)
Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) has drawn our attention to establishing a relation with the Imam of the Age (a.t.f.s.) and even guided us along this path. He outlines how one should present his questions before the Imam (a.t.f.s.) and seek a response from him. In his advice to his son, he (r.a.) mentions:
'O my son, if ever you are presented with a difficulty, the solution of which you desire to seek from Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.), may our lives and souls be sacrificed upon him, then remember the tradition reported by Muhammed Ibn Yaqub Kulaini (r.a.): One day a person came to Abul Hasan (a.s.) and asked him, "If a person wishes to place his desires before his Imam, just as he would place it before Allah, then what should he do?" Imam (a.s.) replied, "If he has any desire, then he must bring it to his lips (he must express his desire); he will receive the reply for it."
It is necessary to clarify the above statement of the Imam. The statement indicates in a simple manner that if one has any needs then he must present it through the medium of prayers and tawassul (seeking help through the mediation of the Imam). It is true that the Imam (a.s.) is aware of the deepest secrets of our heart; nevertheless, he (a.s.) prefers that his followers put forth their desires verbally and express their helplessness with sincerity.
The absolute contact of Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) and his nearness to Imam (a.t.f.s.) was such that the latter (a.t.f.s.), with his benevolence and special grace, had blessed him with deep knowledge and hidden insights. Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) continued to bask in the shade of Imam's (a.t.f.s.) generosity till the end of his life. Such was the perfection of his recognition that Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.), while speaking to his son about the conditions of the reappearance of the Imam (a.t.f.s.) quotes the following verse and says:"Allah preserves whatever He wishes. And obliterates what He wishes"(Surah Ra'ad (13): 39)
'If the above verse were not present in the Holy Quran, I would have informed you easily about the day and the time of Imam's (a.t.f.s.) reappearance, may our lives be sacrificed upon him!'
Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) and praying for the Imam of the Age (a.t.f.s.)
Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) held the recitation of supplication in high regard. He encouraged establishing a personal and private relation with the Holy Imams (a.t.f.s.) as well. For the sake of brevity, we are unable to delve much into the supplications of Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.), though it is sufficient to say that a comprehensive book can be compiled on this topic.
In his book, "Jamaal al-Usboo'", on the topic of the Etiquette of Supplication, Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) writes, "An important aspect to be remembered from the etiquette of supplication is that one should prefer supplicating for Hazrat Baqiyatullah, Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) before seeking one's own desires."
He continues, "At the time of seeking their desires from Allah, believers should first remember the desires of Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.). Thereafter, the believer should express his needs. Do not perform prayers, fast or supplicate out of habit. Remember, each person is tested through his own actions which may lead to a false impression and one cannot rely upon such actions. Your prayers, fasts and supplications should principally be for the sake of Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) and then for yourself. This is because the continued existence this world and its elements are contingent to the blessed presence of the Imam (a.t.f.s.). When your very existence is protected by the existence of another personality, how can it be that we prefer ourselves over that exalted personality? Rather, it is incumbent that we prefer his needs over our own and his desires over our own. And this action itself will be a measure of our servitude and obedience for surely he (a.t.f.s.) is not in need of our prayers and fasts. He (a.t.f.s.) is needless of them. It is we who need him (a.t.f.s.). It is through him that our shortcomings and defects will be corrected and we will enjoy a peaceful and happy life."
Regarding the actions for the holy month of Ramazan, Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.), writes in his book "al-Mazaar" about the supplication which is to be recited before dawn (Seher) as follows: "It is the duty of every believer in the nights of this month that before and after every supplication, he remembers the holy personality of Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) - the representative of the All Merciful Allah amongst His creatures on the face of this earth. This is because he is the owner of all that the one who fasts needs. Allah has entrusted him with all affairs.'(Kitab-e-Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) wa Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.), pp. 90-93)
Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) has enumerated several supplications through which one can reach Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.). These supplications are mentioned in several books. He has also narrated several incidents wherein people have had the glad opportunity to meet the Holy Imam (a.s.). Scholars have suggested that instances, wherein the visitor's name is not mentioned, is Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) himself.
Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) and supplications
Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) has true affection for those who love him. The extent of his fondness and the importance he gives to their remembrance in his prayers is highlighted by Allamah Majlisi (r.a.) and Mohaddes Noori (r.a.). They have both narrated that Sayyed Ibne Taoos (r.a.) said, 'One morning, after Seher, I visited the Sardab (cellar of the house of Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) in Samarra) for offering prayers when I saw that Imam-e- Zaman (a.t.f.s.) was beseeching Allah,
'O Allah! Our Shias have been created from our light and the remainder of our earth (teenat). They have sinned in the hope of our love and benevolence. If their sin is related to Your Exalted Self, then You forgive them. We will be satisfied with Your forgiveness. And if their sin is related to the rights of their brethren, then You correct their shortcomings and grant them from the part of Khums which is our right so that they may be satisfied with it. Protect them from the fire of Hell and do not gather them along with our enemies in Your punishment.'
On reflecting on the words of Imam's (a.t.f..s.) invocation, we are overcome with shame and remorse. The blessed personality, whose continued presence ensures the existence of this world and its sustenance - the Imam of the Age (a.t.f.s.), - prays for sinners like us and seeks forgiveness that we may be saved from Hellfire. For us sinners, who are the direct recipients of his love and affection, is it right that we forget him and remove his remembrance from our hearts and minds? Or rather, shouldn't we ensure that we fill our hearts and minds with his remembrance to such an extent that not a moment of our life passes by without his remembrance?
O Allah! Grant us the taufeeq that we develop the sincere love of our Imam in our hearts! Aameen!

Imam Mahdi (as): The Only Path to Global Security

Again, the world is paying for its deeds. Widespread global unrest, murders, killings, plunder, pillage, confusion, commotion, shortages and scarcities in the market, high prices of commodities, unreliability, straitening of sustenance, etc. are all results and consequences of human vices and misdeeds. Allah the Almighty has drawn the attention of man towards this stark reality in the Holy Quran long back.
"Mischief is manifest in the land and the sea for what the people have earned. "
(Surah Rome (30), Verse 41)
Habitually, we tend to blame others for our ills and absolve ourselves. The question is that if everybody is acquitted, then who is to be convicted? The fact is that all of us are jointly and severally responsible. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) cautioned,
"Each one of you is responsible."
The Holy Quran states,
‘Each man has been made responsible as per his capacity’.
Rather, the duties that have been imposed on man are far beneath his ability. If the reformation and improvement is not within our ability, it is not our responsibility either. Our liability is confined to the extent of our capacity, be it a city, a village, a locality or a house. If we are completely helpless and powerless, then in the least, we have power over our own selves. We can certainly take steps towards the improvement and betterment of our own selves. Today, if we look at ourselves, instead of others, and strive to the best of our ability to improve, train and purify our inner selves, slowly, its effects will be there for all to see. Gradually, our house will become a home, our locality will be safe and secure, our village will improve and our city will change for the better. As we move from mischief towards improvement, from sins to piety, from evil to good, we will notice that insecurity has transformed into security, killings and murders into brotherhood and fraternity, loot and plunder into honesty and trustworthiness, scarcity into abundance, unreliability into dependability and straitening of sustenance into prosperity and affluence.
When the talk is about mischief, generally, the thought of sins arises and vices like lies, backbiting, slander, abandonment of the obligatory acts and perpetration of the prohibited acts, all appear in the mind. All these are the worst kinds of sins. None has the license to defy his Lord, Allah the Almighty. Divine laws are not man-made laws, where manipulating law-breakers perennially exploit the loopholes. These are divine laws where there is no scope for excuses and pretexts.
Our disobedience and defiance of Allah the Almighty is the cause of our problems and difficulties. But the greatest mischief of man and his biggest sin is the denial of the holy being appointed by Allah as His representative, His Friend and His Caliph on the earth and whose love and obedience has been made obligatory on one and all. None has been allowed to cite excuses for his disobedience, or even being indifferent to his mastership.
In a Hadis-e-Qudsi, Allah the Almighty says,
"The greatest obedience is the acknowledgement of My Unity, the verification of My Prophet’s Prophethood and submission before those introduced by the Prophet as his successors, and they are Ali Ibn Abi Taalib and the pure Imams from his progeny."
Another Hadis-e-Qudsi declares,
"O Muhammad! If anyone of My servants worships Me to the extent that he becomes like dust particles or dries like a tree but comes to Me refuting your mastership (Imamat), I will never forgive him. Except for the fact that he acknowledges your mastership. "
In the first tradition, the acknowledgement of Ahle Bait’s (a.s.) mastership has been regarded as the greatest worship, and in the second, its refutation has been deemed as unforgivable. Rather, rejection of the mastership of the Ahle Bait (a.s.) is the destruction of all good deeds performed.
In Surah Yunus (10): Verse 98, the Holy Quran mentions the incident of the people of Prophet Yunus (a.s.). Constant disobedience of Allah’s Prophet by this nation had resulted in an impending divine chastisement. But when they repented sincerely from the depth of their hearts, refrained from violation of Allah’s commands and became His obedient servants, divine chastisement was dispelled.
The same applies for us as well. The difficulties and calamities of this nation will come to an end only if the people forsake the pseudo-divine leaders (mystics and tantriks) and return to the door of the Ahle Bait (a.s.). The day this nation acknowledges the mastership of the Imam appointed by Allah and introduced by the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), and will become completely obedient and submissive before him, it will undergo a noticeable transformation. In the words of the traditions,
"It will be fraught with justice and equity as it would be filled with injustice and oppression."
Today, our most important responsibility is that we believe in the infallible Imams (a.s.) appointed by Allah the Almighty and abhor their enemies. Moreover, we should also invite others towards these holy personalities, a series that begins with Ameerul Momineen Ali Ibn Abi Taalib (a.s.) and ends with Hujjat Ibn al-Hasan, Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.).

The First Special Deputy of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) - Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed al-Amri (r.a.)

Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) was the first special deputy of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) in Minor Occultation (غيبتِ صغري). The renowned Shiite scholar, Shaikh Muhammad b. Hasan at-Tusi (r.a.) records in his illustrious book, ‘Ghaibat’ “Among the companions that the infallible Imams (a.s.) considered as virtuous and pious was Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed al-Amri (r.a.). Imam Ali Naqi al-Hadi (a.s.) and Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) have spoken highly of him and he was their most trusted companion.’[1][18]
His Name And Title
‘Uthman was his name and his father Sa’eed. His name in Rijaal al-Kashi is recorded as ‘Hafs b. Amr’, but other scholars of Ilm al-Rijaal (science of narrators of traditions) have considered this erroneous. His name is widely recorded as ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed.
He has been attributed with 2 agnomens (Kuniyyat) - Abu Amr and Abu Muhammad. He was called Abu Amr since his grandfather’s name was Amr. He was called Abu Muhammad because of his son Muhammad.
In books of Rijaal and traditions he is referred to as Abu Amr. However, in Safinatul Behar and Bihar al-Anwar, he is referred to as Abu Muhammad.
Among Shias Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) is known by four titles.

1. Saman / Zayyat (Oil Vendor)
Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) took up the profession of oil-vending to camouflage his more critical duties and responsibilities of deputyship from the masses in general and the tyrant kings of Bani Abbas in particular. In this way, he protected his own life and the lives of Shias from the persecution of the Bani Abbas.
He had a very ingenious way of operating. He would collect all the money and trusts from the Shias for Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.). Out of fear of the Bani Abbas caliphs, he would conceal all money and trusts in his oil barrels so as to escape the scrutiny of the common masses. In this way, he could safely courier everything to Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.).[2][19]
To keep his position of deputyship secret, he used to supply oil and other goods to the army.[3][20]

2. Asadi
He was a member of the Bani Asad clan and was therefore also famous as ‘Asadi’.

3. al-Askari
He used to reside in Samarra, in a place called ‘Askar’ which implies a military cantonement.

4. Amri
Scholars are unanimous that ‘Amri’ was one of his titles. However, scholars of Ilme-Rijaal have given differing reasons for this title. The illustrious scholar Muhammad b. Hasan Shaikh at-Tusi (r.a.) has explained,
‘First of all he was referred to as Amri due to his grandfather whose name was ‘Amr’. Some scholars have recorded that Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) did not like that the names ‘Uthman (name of third caliph) and Abu Amr should combine in one person. That is why he ordered ‘Uthman to change his Kuniyyat from Abu Amr to Amri.[4][21]
Special Deputy of Three Imams (a.s.)
Shaikh at-Tusi (r.a.) records that at the tender age of 11 years, Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) swore allegiance to Imam Ali Naqi (a.s.) and commenced serving Imam (a.s.). Shaikh at-Tusi (r.a.) has discussed the companions of Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) in detail. While mentioning about Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.), he says, “He was an oil trader famous as Abu Amr. He was an esteemed and reliable companion in the eyes of Imam (a.s.), and was also Imam’s (a.s.) special deputy.” The statement of Shaikh at-Tusi (r.a.) makes it clear that he was deputy of three Imams (a.s.).
He further records that he was also a special deputy of Imam az-Zaman (a.t.f.s.) and enjoyed an elevated and eminent status among the Shias of that period. Likewise, Ibn Dawood al-Hilli in his Rijaal, Marhoom al-Qahyaai in his Majmaul Rijaal and Sayyid Muhammad Mahdi Bahrul Uloom (r.a.) in his Rijaal have recorded this fact. This has also been mentioned in several other books of Rijaal like Tanqeehul Maqaal, Qamoos al-Rijaal, Mojam-o-Rijaalil Hadis.[5][22]
Note
Dr. Jasim Husain in his ‘Tarikh al-Siyaasi al-Ghaibat al-Imam al-Dawazdahum (a.t.f.s.)’ has reported that Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) was among the companions of Abu Ja’far al-Saani Imam Muhammad Taqi al-Jawad (a.s.). Likewise Ibn Shahr al-Aashub in ‘Manaaqib al-Abi Talib (a.s.)’, Shaikh Abbas Qummi (r.a.) in Safinatul Behar and Allamah al-Hilli (r.a.) have recounted this fact.
Ali Ghaffarzadeh in his ‘Pazoohashi Piraamun -e-Zindagani Nuwwab-e-Khaas e-Imam -e-Zaman (a.t.f.s.)’ has rejected the fact that Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) was the deputy of Imam Jawad (a.s.). He writes, ‘Anyone who is even briefly acquainted with the lives of the Imams (a.s.) and Minor Occultation (غيبتِ صغري) will know that Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) was not a deputy nor a companion of Imam Jawad (a.s.). This is not an established fact of history and there is no chain of narration to support such an idea.’
After making this claim, Ali Ghaffarzadeh has outlined the names of scholars who have recorded in their books that Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) was not a companion of Imam Jawad (a.s.).
i. Hajj Muhammad Ardabili (r.a.) in his book ‘Jaameul Ruwaat’
ii. Shaikh Abdullah Mamqaani (r.a.) in ‘Tanqeehul Maqaal’
iii. Allamah Shustari (r.a.) in ‘Qaamoosul Rijaal’
iv. Ayatullah al-Uzma al-Khu’i (r.a.) in ‘Mojamul Rijaal’
After referring to the books of these scholars Ali Ghaffarzadeh concludes that Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) was not among the companions of Imam Jawad (a.s.).[6][23]
It is possible that he did spend a few years under the Imamat of Imam Jawad (a.s.), but may have been too young to qualify for companionship.
His (r.a.) Status in the Words of Imams (a.s.)
Ahmed b. Ishaaq Qummi (r.a.) narrates, ‘I was in the presence of Imam Ali Naqi al-Hadi (a.s.). I said, ‘O my master! At times I have the good fortune of meeting you and at times I am deprived of this blessing. It is not always possible for me to be in direct contact with you. Under such circumstances, who should I contact and whose commands should I obey?’ Imam (a.s.) informed me,

‘This man Abu Amr (Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.)) is a reliable and trustworthy person. Whatever he relates to you is from my side. Whatever he gives to you is from us.’[7][24]
Imam’s (a.s.) narration in favour of Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) underlines the level of Imam’s (a.s.) trust and confidence in him. Moreover, it underscores another important fact - Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) performed some critical duties i.e. to convey Imam’s (a.s.) message and commands to the Shias. The duty of the Shias was to accept this communication and implement it.
After Imam Hadi’s (a.s.) martyrdom, Ahmed b. Ishaaq Qummi (r.a.) once again approached Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) and repeated his previous query who responded thus:
 هٰذا ابوعَمرو الثقةُ الْاَمِيْنُ المَاضى وثقتِى فى المَحيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ فَمَا قَالَهُ لَكم فَعَنِّى يقُولُهُ وَمٰا اَدَّىٰ اليْكم فَعَنِّى يُوٴدِّيْهِ

‘This man Abu Amr (Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.)) is a reliable and trustworthy person. He was dependable for the previous Imam and is dependable and reliable even for me in my lifetime and even after my death. Whatever he conveys to you is from our side and everything he gives to you is from us.’[8][25]

Deputyship of Imam az-Zaman (a.t.f.s.)
Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) appointed Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) as the first special deputy of Imam az-Zaman (a.t.f.s.) in the presence of 40 Shias.
Some Shias like Ja’far b. Muhammad b. Malik al-Fazari, Ali b. Bilal, Ahmed b. Helal, Muhammad b. Muawiyah b. Hakeem, Hasan b. Ayyub b. Nuh have all narrated that they approached Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) specifically to inquire from him about his successor. They recount, “In addition to us, there were 40 other people who were present with Imam (a.s.).
Then Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) rose and asked Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.), “O son of Allah’s Apostle! We wish to ask you a question of which we are sure you are aware.” Imam (a.s.) replied, “O ‘Uthman, be seated.”
All of a sudden the expression on Imam’s (a.s.) face changed and he went out of the room after ordering us to stay in our places and not follow him outside. We did as Imam (a.s.) commanded us. After some time, Imam (a.s.) called out ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed’s (r.a.) name and the latter rose.
Then Imam (a.s.) said, ‘Should I inform you about the reason why you all are here?’ All of us said, ‘O son of Allah’s Apostle! Please inform us.’ Imam (a.s.) revealed, ‘So that you may know who is the Imam after me.’ The members in the assembly replied, ‘Yes. We just saw a young child whose face was beautiful like a part of the moon and looked very similar to you.’
Imam (a.s.) informed, ‘After me, he is your Imam and my successor. Obey him and do not scatter in confusion about him else your religion will be destroyed. After this meeting you shall never see him again until his appointed time. That is why take whatever news you get from ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.).
 فَهُوَ خَلِيْفَةُ اِمَامِكُمْ وَالْاَمْرُ اِلَيْهِ

‘He is the deputy of your Imam and deputyship is for him alone.’[9][26]

‘Uthman B. Sa’eed (r.a.) – The Chief of the Deputies
Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) wrote a lenghty letter to Ishaaq b. Ismail Nishapouri, stating, ‘Don’t leave the city until you meet ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.). Convey to him my salaam. He is trustworthy, pious and reliable and is most proximate to us.

‘All the wealth that is collected from various places for us, is first accumulated with ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) so that it reaches us safely.’[10][27]
Imam’s (a.s.) letter emphasises an important point. All cities where the Shias used to inhabit had deputies. These deputies collected money by way of Khums, Zakaat, etc. from the Shias on behalf of Imam (a.s.). These deputies collectively transmitted all this money to Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.), who in turn finally submitted it to Imam (a.s.) himself.

The Religious and Political Scenario of the Time
If one casts even a cursory glance at the political and religious scenario at the time of Minor Occultation (غيبتِ صغري), he will appreciate the significance of the deputyship of Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.). The government had appointed spies in every nook and corner so as to keep a close watch on the Shias of Imam (a.t.f.s.), especially the trusted and reliable Shias who were known to be proximate to Imam (a.t.f.s.).
As if the government’s persecution was not enough, the differences between the Shias and outbreak of various sects only added to the confusion. Under such trying circumstances, deputyship was an impossible task. However, under Imam’s (a.t.f.s.) constant supervision and guidance, the Shias were rescued from the darkness of doubt and uncertainty and were steered towards the light of guidance and certainty. Being the special deputy of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.), Hazrat ‘Uthman b. Sa’eed (r.a.) played a very important role in this regard.
The criticality of his role can never be fully comprehended and appreciated. On the one hand, he had to unite the Shias who had split into many sects. On the other hand, he had to contend with Ja’far ibn Ali Naqi the government’s candidate for the role of Shiite leadership. To challenge Ja’far was a monumental task. On the martyrdom of Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.), Ja’far usurped the mantle of Imam’s (a.s.) successorship, which gave him the right to lead the Shias after Imam (a.s.).

Criteria for paying allegiance to Imam-e-Asr (a.t.f.s)

Imam Ali (a.s.) has narrated the criteria for allegiance. The companions will
testify in front of Imam-e-Asr (a.t.f.s) to abide by the below mentioned provisions:
1. They shall never rob
2. They shall never indulge in evil actions
3. They shall never abuse any Muslim
4. They shall never kill anyone unjustly
 5. They shall never humiliate anyone
6. They shall never attack anyone’s house
7. They shall never hit anyone unjustly.
8. They shall never hoard gold, silver, wheat and jowar
 9. They shall never consume the right of an orphan
10. They shall never bear witness without absolute surety
11. They shall never destroy a mosque
12. They shall never drink wine
13. They shall never wear silk clothes
14. They shall never obstruct anyone’s path
15. They shall never spread terror on the streets
16. They shall never indulge in homosexuality
17. They shall never hoard food grains and wheat
18. They shall be content with little.
19.They shall be partial towards purity.
20.They would stay away from uncle anness.
21. They will enjoin good
22. They shall forbid evil
23. They shall never wear thickclothes
24. Clay and mud will be their headrest
25. They will struggle in Allah’s Way as one ought to struggle.
Then Imam-e-Asr (a.t.f.s) will pledge the following:
1. He (a.t.f.s.) will travel with them.
2. Will wear the same clothes as them.
3. Will employ the same mode of  transportation as them.
4. Will work as per their desire.
5. Will be happy and content with little.
 6. With Allah’s Help, they will fill the earth with justice and tranquility just as it would have been filled with injustice and tyranny.
7. Will worship Allah in a m anner that He should be worshipped.
(Ilzaamun Nasib, pg 201, Roozgaarhaai, vol. 1, pg. 465, tradition 564, Muntakhabul Asar, pg 469)
Imam (a.t.f.s.) will take allegiance from his companions on these criteria (mentioned earlier) and once the companions fulfill the criteria, then Imam (a.t.f.s.) will remain with them and spend his life alongside them. This highlights the intense love and affection of Imam (a.t.f.s.) for his companions. ‘May my father, my mother, my family, myself and my wealth be sacrificed upon you, O my Master, O Saahebuz Zamaan!

In a salutation recommended by Hazrat Wali-e-Asr (a.t.f.s.), we learn of some other duties

1. The destruction of every enemy of religion.
 2. The end of the enemies of religion and their leaders
3. To act stringently with the transgressors
4.  To bring down every standard representing the oppressors and tyrants

5. To grind to pieces all forces hostile to religion
 6. To disrupt the armies that aim to cause damage to the true religion
7. To destroy those pulpits, which are employed solely to spew venom against Islam
8. To break the swords of the enemies of religion
9. To exterminate the idols
10. Convert strong forts into ruins
11. To close all the doors of mischief and corruption
12.To destroy the palaces of oppression
13. To bring out all the treasures from the earth
14. To establish supremacy over heights and pits
From the abovementioned points one can safely assume and understand that after the reappearance of the radiant light, the responsibilities of Hazrat Wali-e-Asr (a.t.f.s.) will not be limited to narrating the rules but also establishing in totality the perfect religion of Allah. He has to carry out a unique task that has not been performed by anyone till date. The task of all the divine messengers (a.s.) was only to convey the divine message and not its implementation. ‘…only the delivery of the message is (incumbent) on us’ ‘You are only a warner…’
‘You are not a watcher over them’
The duty of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) was to communicate the  message to the nation. His responsibility was to warn the people of the dangers (of disobeying Allah). He (s.a.w.a.) did not exercise control or authority over the people (i.e. he could not compel them to obey divine commands) O Apostle! Deliver…

Will You Be One Of The 313?

In one tradition Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) has mentioned the general traits of the companions of Imam Mahdi (a.s.):

  • Their hearts are stronger than iron.
  • They will be having complete faith in Allah. There is no place for doubts in their hearts.
  • They shall be tougher than stones. They will uproot the mountain only by turning towards it.
  • They will conquer every city they enter with their standard.
  • They are like swift eagles, mounted on fast horses.
  • They will touch the saddle of Imam’s (a.t.f.s.) mount to seek blessings.
  • They will be encircling Imam (a.t.f.s.) to safeguard him from all calamities and misfortune.
  • They will fulfill every desire of Imam (a.t.f.s.) with their heart and soul. They will not sleep in the nights.
  • They will buzz like honeybees in their prayers.
  • They will pass the night in worship and in the morning they will be seen mounted on horses, ready for helping Imam (a.t.f.s.).
  • They will be devout worshippers by the night and like the lions in the day. They will be more submissive and obedient to Imam than a maidservant. They are like burning lamps and their hearts are like glowing beacons. They are fearful of Allah and testify to His Unity.
  • They are hopeful of martyrdom in the Way of Allah.
  • Their slogan will be “O Avenger of Husain!”
  • When they march, their awe will precede them by a distance of one month’s journey.
  • These are the ones who seek Allah’s Pleasure.
  • Allah will help Imam (a.t.f.s.) through them.
(Behaarul Anwaar, vol. 52, pg. 307-08, tradition 82)
Number of companions
Imam Mohammad Taqi (a.s) declared,
‘Allah will gather his followers around him. Their number will be 313, the same as the companions of Badr. They will gather from different parts of the earth.’ And this is the exegesis of Allah’s Words, ‘…wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together; surely Allah has power over all things.
(Surah Baqarah, Verse148) (Behaarul Anwaar, vol. 52, pg. 283, tradition 10)
This is the number of companions after the aggregation of which, Imam (a.t.f.s.) will announce his reappearance from the Holy Kaaba.
All  these individuals will be among the sincere ones and when this number swells up to ten thousand, then by Allah’s order, Imam (a.t.f.s.) will establish himself (as Allah’s Representative) and will kill the enemies of Allah.
(Ibid)
How will they gather?
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) prophesied,
‘When our Qaem (a.t.f.s.) will establish himself, Allah will gather the people of the East and West. These people will come together in one place in the same m anner as the leaves gather in one place in autumn.’
(Al Sawaeq Al Mohreqa, pg. 163; Muntakhab Al Asar, pg. 477)
According to another tradition from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) these people will gather in one place with the blinking of an eye.
(Ilzam An Nasib, pg. 200)
They will spend the night in their homes and by dawn-break, will reach Makkah Al Mukarramah.
(Behaarul Anwaar, vol. 52, pg. 286, tradition 21)
